Japan has opened significant work pathways for Nepali workers through its Specified Skilled Worker program. This guide covers eligible industries, language requirements, and how to apply.
Japan as an Overseas Destination
Japan has emerged as one of the most desirable overseas work destinations for Nepali workers — offering high wages, strong worker protections, and long-term visa pathways that are not available in Gulf markets. The Japanese government's Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) program was introduced to address critical labor shortages in specific industries.
Which Industries Are Open?
The SSW program covers 12 industry sectors relevant to Nepali workers:
- Nursing care / elderly care
- Building cleaning management
- Industrial machinery manufacturing
- Electronic and electrical equipment manufacturing
- Construction
- Shipbuilding and marine industry
- Automobile repair and maintenance
- Aviation
- Accommodation (hotels)
- Agriculture
- Fishery and aquaculture
- Food and beverage manufacturing
Language Requirements
Japanese language proficiency at JLPT N4 level is required for most SSW categories. This is a practical conversational level — equivalent to roughly 300–500 hours of study. AJEETS Nepal works with language training partners to help candidates prepare.
Skills Assessment
In addition to Japanese language, candidates must pass a sector-specific skills evaluation test administered by Japan's relevant ministry. These tests assess practical knowledge in the candidate's target industry.
Wages and Benefits
SSW workers receive wages equivalent to Japanese nationals in the same role — a legal requirement. Monthly wages typically range from JPY 160,000–230,000 (approximately NPR 160,000–230,000) depending on sector and location. Accommodation support is common.
