Fraudulent job offers cost Nepali workers millions each year and damage lives. Learn how to identify warning signs and protect yourself when applying for overseas work.
The Scale of the Problem
Recruitment fraud is a serious problem in Nepal's overseas employment sector. Fake job offers, illegal brokers demanding large upfront fees, and destination fraud (workers arriving to find the job does not exist as described) cause enormous harm to workers and their families.
Warning Signs of a Fraudulent Offer
- Unusually high wages — if a construction worker is being promised AED 4,000 per month with no experience required, question it
- Large upfront fees — legitimate licensed agencies have regulated service charges. Anyone demanding large fees before you have a confirmed job offer should be avoided
- No written contract — every overseas employment arrangement must have a documented contract in a language you understand
- Pressure to decide quickly — fraudsters create urgency to prevent you from checking the offer's legitimacy
- Unlicensed agency — any agency not registered with DoFE is operating illegally
- Tourist visa for work — legitimate work requires a proper work visa, not a tourist visa
How to Verify a Recruitment Agency
Before signing anything or paying any fee:
- Visit the DoFE website and search for the agency's registration number
- Visit the agency's physical office in person — do not rely on WhatsApp or phone alone
- Ask for the demand letter from the overseas employer — this is a legal document
- Have the contract reviewed before signing
If You Suspect Fraud
Report any suspicious activity to the Department of Foreign Employment at their helpline or at their Kathmandu office. You can also contact the Nepal Police's Foreign Employment Fraud Control Unit.
